Sasmuan

Brief History:

Known as "Sexmoan" since the American occupation until it was officially rebaptized Sasmuan, the town used to be called "Sasmoan". The word "Sasmoan" traditionally means "Tabnuan" or to gather and assemble. It was in this place where a band of patriotic Pampangos from surrounding towns used to assemble and launch attacks against Chinese invaders and Spanish soldiers.

It is one of the oldest communities and the site of the first church in the province built by Augustinian priests. Although Sasmuan is one of the oldest settled communities in Pampanga it remains to be a 5th class municipality, it has the lowest income among all towns of the province. People derive their main income from teeming fishponds, most of which were considered as illegally constructed, as well as from communal fishing grounds from the town's coastal area, rivers, streams and waterways.

Sta. Lucia, its patroness, is a saint icon that attracts devotees during the town fiesta. A folk event - the kuraldal - highlights quasi-religious festivities in the town. Joining this traditional street ritual in honor of Sta. Lucia was believed to guarantee fecundation of barren women.
